Expertise

Iain’s expertise lies in the financial analysis that underpins commercial disputes. His work focuses on two core areas: quantifying the damages suffered by parties in litigation and arbitration, and resolving contested business valuations.

Quantification of Damages

When a contract is breached, an investment is expropriated, or a business is harmed, the central question is often: how much has been lost? Iain works with legal teams to answer this question, applying financial and economic analysis to quantify losses in a manner that is robust, well-evidenced, and capable of withstanding cross-examination.

His damages work spans a wide range of scenarios including lost profits, diminution in value in M&A disputes, compensation for patent infringement, and the valuation of expropriated assets in investor-state proceedings.

Contentious Business Valuations

Business valuations become contentious when the parties to a dispute disagree on what a business, or a share in a business, is worth. This arises frequently in shareholder disputes, minority oppression proceedings, joint venture dissolutions, and corporate restructurings.

Iain brings both valuation expertise and an understanding of the legal frameworks within which these disputes are resolved, combining financial analysis with practical experience of how tribunals and courts assess valuation evidence.

Industries

Iain’s cases have spanned a broad range of industries including oil and gas, financial services, construction, mining, manufacturing, hospitality, retail, telecommunications, shipping and aviation, cryptocurrency and trading platforms, and the food and beverage sector, among others.

Geographical Reach

His work covers cases across six continents, with particular depth of experience in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the broader Asia-Pacific region. He has been appointed for proceedings in Singapore, the UK, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Nepal, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Korea, Japan, and the Abu Dhabi Global Market Courts.
